Case Study 04 — CCTV Pipeline Inspection

Stainless Steel Pipeline Inspection — Quantem, Port Botany

Transport & Utilities Bulk Liquid Terminal IBAK Camera System Port Botany, Sydney

Full CCTV Inspection of a Complex Bulk Chemical Pipeline Network

Hydro Logic was engaged to conduct a comprehensive CCTV inspection of the stainless steel pipeline infrastructure at Quantem's bulk liquid terminal within the Sydney Ports precinct. The facility receives bulk chemical shipments directly from vessels docking at the terminal, which are transferred through the pipeline network into storage. Following the installation of a new pipeline, pressure testing identified weak points that failed to meet the required standard. A full CCTV inspection of the entire pipeline network was required to locate and document all defects before remediation could be planned.

Too Many Bends for a Conventional Camera

The pipeline presented a significant technical challenge for conventional inspection methods. The network contained a high number of bends and directional changes that made it impossible for a standard tractor-mounted crawler camera to navigate through the full length of the pipeline.

To overcome this, Hydro Logic first pigged the line to install pull ropes through the pipeline network the day prior to the inspection. This allowed a push camera system to be guided through sections that would otherwise be inaccessible, ensuring complete coverage of the full pipeline length. The chemical nature of the product handled through the facility also required strict site safety compliance and a thorough site induction process before any works could commence.

Pigging, Pull Ropes and IBAK Push Camera Deployment

Following site induction and mobilisation to the Quantem facility, Hydro Logic deployed an IBAK push camera system, guided through the pipeline using the pull ropes installed during the preceding day's preparatory works. Where network configuration permitted, an IBAK crawler camera system was also deployed. High-resolution footage was captured throughout the full inspection, with all findings documented in a detailed WinCan condition report. The report outlined the condition and functionality of the inspected pipeline network, identifying the location and nature of all defects and weak points detected during the inspection.

Full Network Inspected. Comprehensive WinCan Report Delivered.

The full pipeline network was successfully inspected and a comprehensive WinCan condition report was delivered to the client, providing clear evidence of all defects identified during testing. The inspection report gave Quantem and their engineering team the information required to make informed decisions about remediation scope and priority. The project demonstrated Hydro Logic's capability to inspect complex, access-restricted pipeline configurations where conventional inspection methods are not viable.
